I completed an errand for my mother the other day and instantly wished I was picking up her purchases for my own home. Among her many skills, Mum is a keen shopper who has a knack for always finding astounding bargains. Whether it’s clothing or homewares, I swear all the price tags turn red and sale prices take a dive in her presence. It should have come as no surprise, then, that the black Cape Cod chairs I manoeuvred into the back of my car that day had been marked down by at least 40 per cent. Made of plastic, yet heavy and robust, the iconic design would have looked right at home on my deck. Buying some inviting and comfortable outdoor furniture is on my to-do list. There’s nothing quite like basking in the summer heat, perferably beneath a shade or umbrella, with a drink within reach and a book on your lap. Sitting poolside – where I will be when we test Mum’s new purchases – is even better, but it’s not essential as long as either the view is good, or the company better. In this issue, we’ve found some outdoor furniture options that will add colour to your backyard (p. 5). To find out how we should approach our outdoor spaces, we put some questions to Debbie Cavit, who has just opened the third showroom of her interior design business Cavit & Co, here in Christchurch (p. 7). She understands the importance of connecting indoor and outdoor areas – a factor of design that made a new build project by Robert Weir of WeirWalker Architecture an award-winning one. See the ‘Rockhill Residence’ and read about another local winner from the 2015 ADNZ | Resene Architectural Design Awards on page 6. In our ‘Sustainable Solutions’ feature, Rebecca Lees poses an interesting question: when was the last time you let your garden go wild? OutdOOr cOlOur Creating a scheme for the outside of your home is often harder than doing the same job on the inside. For a start, there’s a lot of cladding, acres of roof, and fiddly bits to trip you up. Then you’re up against our strong light quality, which means colours can look very different than they do on the paint charts when you’re sitting indoors. Often the style of your home will dictate the types of exterior colours you use: heritage tones for a villa, soft gelato shades for an art deco stucco cottage or brooding black for a contemporary masterpiece. There are a surprising number of exterior features to consider when compiling a colour scheme. There’s obviously the largest component – the main cladding material, which in itself can be split into various zones. Then there are the windows (again, these can become the site for various colours, especially with older homes like villas). The roof is a large surface area and often overlooked as having an important impact on the scheme. Always keep in mind, the steeper the pitch of the roof, the more of it will be visible. For inspiration: • Check out similar styles of houses in your neighbourhood and the colours they are painted in. • Keep a scrapbook of ideas you love, so you get a feel for your own style and take it with you when you go shopping. • Browse through the colour schemes on the Habitat by Resene website (www.habitatbyresene.co.nz) to see how other homeowners have used paint colours to bring out the best in their homes. Bring a photo of your home and let a Resene colour expert help you choose. Always test your colour with a Resene testpot, as colours change depending on what they are painted onto

and the quality of the light. Colours usually look much lighter outdoors. They also change if you put them beside other colours: a grey roof makes green walls look fresher, and a high-gloss finish (rather than a low-sheen finish) renders a colour brighter. Contrasts make a colour scheme more interesting, but make sure you only highlight details if they deserve the focus. A bright red front door, yes, but maybe not an old garden shed. Soft mushroom shades have been fashionable, but there’s a definite move towards cleaner colours with greyer bases, and blackened and greyed off whites. Or you might tip those grey tones over into slatey blues – these sorts of colours always look great in a country like ours, surrounded by sea and with our clear blue skies.
Is black the new whIte? In recent years black exteriors, stained or painted, have become popular, but they may not always be technically suitable. Dark colours absorb more of the sun’s heat and can put stress on the cladding. With any darker colour, consider using the Resene CoolColour range, formulated with special pigment technology to reflect more of the sun’s energy. This helps to keep the coating and substrate cooler, reducing the likelihood of heat damage such as warping. Always check with your cladding supplier before you apply a dark coating. If in doubt opt for a lighter colour and choose the Resene CoolColour version to reduce heat build up.

winning in Christchurch Home & Leisure asks Robert weir about his awardwinning design of a home in Kennedy’s Bush and how exterior spaces affect new builds. When you drive around our city, it is clear Cantabrians have a taste for quality and the experts on hand to make grand designs a reality. Take the Rockhill Residence, in Kennedy’s Bush, for example. Its modern design and clean lines fit the owners’ brief for something bold and striking, while its seamless transition between indoor and outdoor spaces allows the home to take in its northerly views and makes the most of the property’s prime location. The quality of the Rockhill Residence was recognised at the recent ADNZ | Resene Architectural Design Awards. Robert Weir of WeirWalker Architecture won the highly competitive Residential New Home (over 300sqm) category with this home. The judges applauded the way in which its interior and exterior spaces connect, predicting the building and its landscape will “grow together to complement one another”. For Robert, this aspect was in part achieved by keeping entry access level (i.e. no steps), and including multiple decks. Says Robert, “All living areas also had access to the outdoors so the owners can step outside whenever they want,” as befitting a contemporary home. To achieve a similar effect with your own build, ensure your design team works together. “On this build we met with the landscape architect and made sure we were on the same page, so that we achieved a cohesive result,” Robert explains. “[Homeowners] also should consider natural elements around the home, e.g. the weather and the conditions of the site, and have a multitude of outdoor entertaining areas to suit different wind and sun conditions with easy access to all of them.” To maximise time spent enjoying your outdoor areas, Robert encourages homeowners to consider a variety of differently designed spaces around the home. ”Also consider using different heating elements... There are some very smart forms of heating that can make a big difference to how you use a space.” At the award ceremony, held at the Transitional ‘Cardboard’ Cathedral, there was another local winner within the national

There’s a shift in focus as we head into the rising heat of summer. Suddenly, all that is within your four walls becomes secondary to what is outside them. In the coming months, your house becomes the welcome mat for your exterior dining and entertaining spaces. So, how’s it looking out there and what should you do to ensure it’s ready for afternoons watching children playing in sprinklers and long, late evenings of entertaining? Giving your backyard a new look doesn’t have to be a huge job. “Textiles are a definite way to refresh a tired seating,” says creator and owner of Cavit & Co, Debbie Cavit, “A jolly good clean and some new cushions can be a wonderful quick fix.” Give the deck a good scrub, source a new umbrella, refresh a weathered shade cloth and you will soon be gazing out at an area that feels anew. Not everyone has the luxury of expansive open spaces, in which options appear endless. However, you can still do a lot within small confines. A good start, as Debbie recommends, is to get your lighting right, as this will immediately open up the space. From then, you could try an intimate French-café-like setting for two, or simply provide luxurious-looking seating that begs to be sat on – “Even if it is a simple built-in bench or a beautiful lounger to relax and enjoy the outdoors.” Debbie also suggests natural shade be part of the overall plan, and encourages us to plan our landscaping to complement our setting. “A fruit tree trained to grow on suspended wire can look fantastic.” If your furniture is looking a bit tired, a flick of paint or stain on wooden pieces will make a huge difference. However, if you are wanht to take the look into 2016, Debbie has some on-trend advice: “At Cavit & Co, we are seeing a lot of beautiful aluminium designs with fabulous finishes – from large Cape Cod pieces to minimalist shapes. In the wood ranges, we are seeing three key colours – bleached teak, natural tree and darker tones.” For those starting from scratch, before you get carried away at the sales, you need to determine how you will use this area. “This includes how many people you are likely to entertain, where will you fit a dining set as well as lounge seating and where the wind is coming from and what kinds of outdoor heating you will have.” After all, this is going to be the place you head to enjoy all that summer has to offer – you want your outdoor space to offer a good balance between pretty and practical. No matter what you choose, remember your exterior is an extension of your interior. As Debbie says, “Colours need to carry through, in addition to textiles and the proportions of furniture. It all needs to gel.” After all, you wouldn’t want your welcome mat clashing with its door, right?

Some of us go to the mall or movie theatre, or even overseas, to experience something new or to take time out. There’s a much simpler way you can enjoy new and interesting things each day, all at little cost and from the comfort of your own yard – in your new wild space. Backyards are sought-after places. Some people don’t even have a yard to enjoy and those who do may not be enjoying them to their full extent. The most fascinating thing I’ve done lately is to let my lawn go, and create a wild space for outdoor living.
Sure, I still have my deck with its tables and chairs, all clean, tidy and orderly – that hasn’t changed. But my wild space is new, it’s exciting, and constantly changing. It’s a place I can sit and enjoy nature’s beauty with little effort from me. Start by choosing a spot in your yard that is currently underutilised. You might have an area of garden that doesn’t grow much at all, or a stony corner by a fence. Decide which area will be your wild space and make the decision to keep it that way, for, say, a year (or, even better, two). That spot is there

Depending on your area and soil fertility it might need a helping hand. Soil doesn’t grow much? Then sprinkle a handful of wildflowers. Choose beneficial insect blends, if you can. The area has broken, cracked steps? Perfect – scatter a handful of seeds that are past their best-before date in those cracks, then blow some dandelion seeds around, too – they’re great for bees. Within a short time, your wild space will begin to grow and change. Let it. This is the space that is supposed to be left to do its thing. Over time the space will change, this is the magical part – enjoy it. Once you have decided where your garden edge will go, measure the width of your edging blocks and mark out a channel at this width. This can be done with a spade or by painting a line with spray paint.
Dig out this channel with your spade taking care to get the edges vertical. Dig about 30mm deeper than your block thickness. As we are using 50mm blocks we will dig a 80mm deep channel.
TIP: A level and string line would make laying the blocks easier and the finish more accurate.

Fill the bottom 30mm of channel with sand. This will allow you to level the bottom and give you something to bed the blocks into.
Lay the front blocks in a line on top of the sand. You may need to use more sand in places to ensure they are all level. The top of the block should be level with the soil under the grass. Tap the blocks lightly with a mallet to get them into place.
Lay the rear blocks in the same way as step four but on edge. This will act as a garden edge to prevent your garden mulch spilling on to the mow strip.
Continue around the garden until you reach the end. Step back and admire your new garden edge.

2. Bench step-ups
Make the most of your local playground
Main muscle groups worked: Legs and buttocks. This exercise includes cardiovascular as well as resistance components. Start by standing on the ground in front of a park bench. Step one foot up, all the way onto the bench, then the other, then step back down one foot at a time. You can either step the first foot, tap the second foot, step the second foot down, and then the first foot down, or step up first foot, second foot, first foot down, second foot down.
Elly McGuinness views playgrounds as free fitness solutions for young and old alike. The days are warm and light now and there’s no doubt the kids will be pleading to visit the playground more often. Even if you don’t have kids, Christchurch is full of great playgrounds that provide a free fitness solution for kids and adults alike. The equipment provides countless opportunities to get in your cardiovascular (‘huffy puffy’) activity as well as your resistance (‘muscle’) exercises. Here are three exercises that require no more than what you will find at the playground.
1. MoDifieD chin-ups Main muscle groups worked: Back, rear shoulders and front of arms. Find a playground bar at an appropriate level – the lower the bar, the harder it will be. Hold onto the bar with two hands – either over or underhand grip is fine, and bring your legs underneath the bar. Keep shoulders drawn back and down, and tummy pulled in strong. Pull yourself up to the bar, aiming to get the chin above the bar and puff the chest out towards the bar. Lower back to the start position with control. If you need a bit more assistance, you can use the legs to do some of the drive to the top of the movement. As your strength progresses you can attempt a full chin-up – choose a bar that you can completely hang from. Even just hanging from a bar will prove a good challenge for the hands, arms and shoulders to begin with.
sTEp-ups: Great cardio and resistance exercise.
3. tricep Dips on Bench Main muscle groups worked: chest, front of shoulders, back of arms Start with your hands on the bench and feet on the ground. Hands are shoulder distance apart and facing forward, and feet are hip distance apart. Shoulders are drawn back and down, and your buttocks should be close to the bench. Lower body down by letting elbows bend back, and then push back to the top. Elbows should stay close (shoulder distance) throughout. Extend the legs in front for a more advanced version.
Chin-ups: Start small and you’ll be doing full chinups in no time.
TriCEp Dips: Do a few dips at your bench as you watch the kids have a play.
Start with 10 repetitions of each exercise. Repeat for two sets if you are feeling energetic. Always refer to a qualified exercise professional for advice on technique and to determine an appropriate progression for your individual fitness level.

Play golf with a Frisbee Linda Moser suggests we get involved with this exciting sport that promises fun, physical challanges and fresh air. FOUR! It’s golf, but not as you know it.
Now the warmer weather is upon us and the daylight hours are getting longer it might be time to head outdoors and try something new. Imagine if you could enjoy beautiful surroundings and scenery, fresh air and sunshine, and treat your mind and body to a workout all at the same time. Well, you can. ‘Frisbee golf’ offers upper and lower body conditioning, provides aerobic exercise and requires both physical and mental capacities. Players can improve concentration skills, socialise, have a good laugh and get a workout simultaneously, but the best part is that it’s often free. First formalised in 1970, Frisbee golf, or ‘disc golf’, is played much like contemporary golf minus the clubs and little white ball. The object of the game is to complete the course using the fewest throws/strokes while avoiding naturally occurring obstacles like trees, shrubs and terrain changes.
The hole, in Frisbee golf, is an elevated metal basket suspended on a pole. Discs of various sizes and weights are used and work like different clubs in traditional golf. Some are designed to carry long distances and are equivalent to drivers, while others have a short distance range and can be used where a putter normally would. Here in Christchurch, we are fortunate to have access to an 18-hole course with permanent disc golf baskets purchased from a $10,000 donation from the Freemasons of Christchurch. Jellie Park hosts the 1200-metre mixed course that boasts open spaces, treed sections and grassy areas on slightly sloped ground. The course begins on the Greers Rd side of Jellie Park and winds its way around the central pond, hugging the perimeter of the park. It offers three pitch and putt holes with the longest being 106m. It’s a relatively
short round, taking between one and two hours to complete and is suitable for young and old alike. Like traditional golf, people play to their own capabilities and aim to beat their best score. Because Jellie Park is a shared public park, other users get priority and a hole should be skipped if anyone is at risk of getting hit by a disc. Regular Sunday afternoon games are played and attended by up to 25 players. Frisbee golf can be enjoyed by men, women and children, can be played year round and generally does not have fixed tee times making it something that players can decide to do at the spur of the moment.
